| It
all began one Friday morning, April 11th, 1986, in a cramped
room at KPFK known as Master Control. The first "Canto Tropical"
show aired
from 9:30am to 11:30am that morning. At the
helm was Hector "La Voz" Resendez, a veteran public radio
broadcaster. Throughout the following years, a number of
great co-hosts have graced the KPFK studios: Gloria Gutierrez,
Gustavo Aragon, Pia Franco. Kathy "La Rumbera Diaz", Armando
Nila, and Bonnie Perkinson. |
| Today,
the "Canto Tropical" salsa show is presented every Saturday
night from 8:00 pm to 10:00 pm. The bilingual program airs
over the entire Southern California area due to its powerful
frequency of 112,000 watts. There is also a repeater station
with 35,000 watts serving the Santa Barbara County area. |
| From
cha cha cha, son montuno, bolero, ballad, guaracha, mambo,
merengue, and to the hot salsa tunes, "Canto Tropical" opens
up the show with its traditional half-hour of non-stop music!
From contemporary to classic musical selections, to special
themes and holiday shows, listeners can always expect something
different with each show. There are no rotation lists or
commercials to interfere with the highly entertaining and
varied presentation of the "Canto Tropical" staff. |
